Hello, I’m Samy

Have you ever gone travelling and had no idea where to start, spent ages trying to save up just for a small glimpse of the world? Have you gone through thousands of travel blogs and found they always rely on the latest trends and Instagram spots that just aren’t you?

If your favourite colour is black and your favourite music is just noise, if you love the strange and unusual but always seem to be broke, then maybe this one is for you.

The whys and the whats…

Before we launch into our list of trips, tricks and recommendations, we thought we should give you the run down on who we are and why we decided to write our own adventure guide.

My name is Samy and this is Chris ‘Hello there!’. When I was growing up, I rarely traveled anywhere, the furthest I had been was Disneyland Paris when I was 7. I warn you now, this comes up a lot. Chris on the other hand travelled a little further than that. His Dad has a passion for travel so any opportunity to whisk the family away, he did.

Our first travel together was to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2012. This was my first time on a plane, and I had to get Diazepam to help me through the anxiety whereas Chris was so relaxed, he was asleep before takeoff. This first trip away taught me a few things, the main one (for me) is be careful what you take. We went for 14 days, so I packed a large softshell suitcase which was full to the brim. I could still lift it but looking back now this was excessive. On the way home, as I watched our travelling party struggle with weight restrictions and having to swap items between each other I realised it would be far easier to pack less on the way out so you could bring more home. After a few trips, I noticed that I was taking the same amount but not actually using half of it.

After pages and pages of internet forums and blogs, I realized that its all for those lovely Instagram travelers who buy the packing cubes and are there for the gram. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, I don’t think it’s a realistic view of the world.

We have a … different lifestyle and therefore a different view of the world. We are what you would call ‘alternative’ meaning we have a lot of tattoos and piercings on display and wear a lot of black. In some countries this draws a lot of unwanted attention and disapproving looks. So, we decided to write down all of our dos and don’ts and share them with like minded people. Oh, and did I mention we do it all on the cheap?
